#TIL that Mr Edmund William Barker (E.W. Barker) helmed more than five ministerial positions during his career, showcasing his remarkable versatility and leadership. He was our first and longest serving Minister for Law, National Development, Home Affairs, Environment, Science and Technology. And even the Interim Minister for Labour at one point in time!
His notable political contributions encompass negotiating the separation from Malaysia, shaping the Constitution, and spearheading key legislations such as the Land Acquisition Act and the Preservation of Monuments Act.
Beyond politics, Mr Barker was a champion athlete who advocated for sports development in Singapore. He was instrumental in the development of our iconic National Stadium which replaced the Jalan Besar Stadium for the Southeast Asian Games in 1973.
Even after retiring from politics, he continued to serve the country through prominent roles including as the non-executive chairman of the Singapore Stock Exchange, and chairman of the Bukit Turf Club. Of Eurasian heritage, he never defined himself by race or referred to himself as a “Eurasian Minister”. To him, he was a Singaporean devoted to serving his fellow citizens and contributing to Singapore’s progress.
